Ukraine Not Planning To Recognize Independence of South Ossetia
Ukraine does not intend to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. President Viktor Yanukovych announced this at a press conference.
"According to international laws and norms, any violation of the integrity or one country or another is prohibited. We do not have the right to welcome these processes in the world ... talk less of recognizing them. I have never recognized [the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia], and you will not find [this] in any of my interviews," Yanukovych said.
Abkhazia's President Sergei Bagapsh recently expressed confidence that Ukraine will recognize the independence of Abkhazia.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Foreign Affairs Minister Kostiantyn Hryschenko said in mid-May that Ukraine favored preservation of Georgia's territorial integrity.
